Strategy games will always have a special place in the PC gaming space. There is just something unique about seeing the battlefield, planning out your moves, and watching it all unfold. Be it real-time or turn-based, the genres never fail to keep your mind thinking and moving. Firaxis’ reimagining of the XCOM series and the more recent Phoenix Point from Snapshot Games are but two examples. Now, Splash Damage and The Coalition want Gears Tactics to be the next big player in the genre when it launches in two weeks.
Big and loud
Available for preload now ahead of its April 28 launch, Gears Tactics has just revealed its launch trailer. Needless to say, it is chock-full of important information. More importantly, it makes the game seem really fun and exciting. Taking place 12 years before the first game, Gears Tactics take players into the life of Sergeant Gabe Diaz, the father of Gears 5‘s protagonist, Kate Diaz. The Locusts are still a major threat, and it will be up to you to assemble the team of your dreams and take down Ukkon, the lead scientist of the Locust Horde.
The biggest change to the gameplay is that Gears Tactics shifts the perspective to an isometric view, much like in XCOM. You will need to juggle movement, combat, and protecting your troops as you plan your assault. New recruits need to be trained, soldiers outfitted, and added to one of the five unique classes. Be it a Vanguard, Sniper, Support, Scout, or Heavy, each Gear will have plenty to work with. There are over 150 skills to unlock, and they will definitely bring the hurt to your enemies.
Movement and combat should be familiar to fans of the strategy/tactics sphere, but the series’s signature executions are back and more important than ever. More than just a bloodthirsty and satisfying end to your foes, it also keeps you fighting. Talk about incentive!
Gears Tactics will have plenty of rewards, and best of all, there are no microtransactions. So if your squad ends up looking fine as hell, it is all your hard work. Rise up and fight this coming April 28 when Gears Tactics arrives on PC.
