Oka reportedly came up with the idea for the film while he was playing an MMO:

“You can be whoever you want to be,” he said. “The question came to me: What if you had to live up to the person you created in the virtual world?”

As reported on THR, the story is based around a group of online gamers from all over the world who are forced to meet up to tackle a real life adventure. Oka is said to be a fan of films such as ‘The Goonies’, which is the type of movie Dreamworks producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were looking to make before they signed up for The Defenders.
