If you were asked to guess what revered roleplaying studio inXile Entertainment would make next, a team-based VR shooter would likely be last on your list. However, the studio has surprised us with the reveal of Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds. InXile is also hard at work developing Wasteland 3, but that’s not stopping them from exploring new frontiers.
Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland in Antarctica. There, players team up for 20-player battles in various PvP game modes. The added twist is that there will be unique PvE elements. Forget human AI enemies, though. Frostpoint VR will pit players against gigantic and terrifying biomechanical creatures.
InXile promises both “beautiful maps and engaging game modes like capture and control,” which sounds intense in VR. At any rate, the 10v10 PvP affair will require proper strategy and gear for your team to win. Shooting well, moving as a team, and being aware of your surroundings will serve you well as you fight for control of a forgotten military base in the cold. Add in the constant threat of otherworldly monsters and we have a proper sci-fi setting.
Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds will also feature highly detailed weapons. Over a dozen options await, and you will be expected to handle them in a realistic way. Players will have to load, rack, fire, and clear weapons when the need arises. Firing modes must also be changed for appropriate situations. Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds packs in tools like grenades, armor upgrades, turrets, health kits, and even tracking upgrades to complete the arsenal as well.
Although InXile is an Xbox studio at this point, Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds will be published by Japanese developer Thirdverse Inc. More information about that will arrive later this year.
