Metal Gear Solid Psycho Mantis

Bust out your nanomachines and get your “Snake, Snake, SNAKE!” yell ready. The Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee has placed ratings on several Konami classics for PC release. Among the games rated are the original Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, and the enhanced Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance.

At the moment it appears as though these will be direct ports of the original versions of these games, rather than the HD versions released back in 2011 or new remasters. Surprisingly enough, this isn’t the first time these older Metal Gear games have come to PC.

The original Metal Gear was of course an MSX 2 game back in the ’80s. We forgive you if you only remember the NES version. Konami ported Metal Gear Solid to PC in 2000, two years after its original PS1 release. Lastly, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance came to PC in 2003, a year and a half after the original version, Sons of Liberty, graced the PS2. Sadly, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater doesn’t seem to have made the cut for re-release.

Also rated for PC release is Konami Collector’s Series: Castlevania and Contra. This collection includes the original Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, and the underrated Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Also included are Contra and Super C, as the collection title suggests. It originally released for PC back in 2002, but has since been supplanted by the Castlevania Anniversary Collection and Contra Anniversary Collection respectively. Both anniversary collections include far more titles from each series and came out just last year, so it’s a strange move to put out this older collection again.

In any case, this should at least provide a good excuse for Metal Gear heads to revisit some of the older games in the series. It may even pave the road for a complete Metal Gear series collection to come to PC in the future. A few questions remain like: “what save data will Psycho Mantis read during his fight?” and “will I have to switch which USB port my mouse and keyboard are plugged into to beat him?” Hopefully we get those answers soon.
