The NPD group figures show that the PlayStation 4 was the number one console when it came to sales in Australia last year, and that it was able to get ahead of the Xbox One despite their heated rivalry.
The console market grew 27% in Australia last year which was no doubt helped by the launch of Microsoft’s new Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4. Although the figures suggest that Sony is currently in the lead against Microsoft in Australia, Microsoft seems unfazed by the idea.
Jeremy Hinton, Business Group Lead Interactive Entertainment at Microsoft said that gamers have spent more money the Xbox One, as well as more unit sales of the console, games, and accessories than the PS4. It could be argued however that the reason gamers spent more on the Xbox One was because it costs $50 more.
This is still good for Microsoft though especially considering that they had a limited supply of consoles available in Australia.
Hinton said: “Xbox One saw higher unit sales of consoles, games and accessories than any other next generation console in Australia last year and topped all prior console launches in the country’s history.” He continued: “Supply of the Xbox One has been limited since Christmas, however we are doing our best to meet demand, especially for Australians looking to join the action with the launch of Titanfall on March 13.”
