Minecraft gets immortalized in Video Game Hall of Fame

Mojang Studios built it, and everyone came.

The Strong Museum has announced its 2020 inductees to the Video Game Hall of Fame. Minecraft, Bejeweled, King’s Quest, and Centipede have officially joined the ranks of legendary titles and will be featured in the museum. The Strong Museum recognized the event with a short video that highlighted the story of Minecraft and the other games.

The video notes the historical interest of children with construction toys as one of the reasons Minecraft found so much success. The Strong Museum calls Minecraft “perhaps the most innovative construction toy of all time,” referring to the game’s limitless possibilities.

Lydia Winters, the chief storyteller at Mojang Studios, thanked the Strong: “We’re honored to be inducted into the World Video Games Hall of Fame at the Strong and sit alongside such an incredible lineup of games throughout history.”

The Nether is Minecraft‘s next update, coming June 23.

Fortune and fame for Mojang

Minecraft became an instant global hit after it debuted in 2009. The game has sold over 200 million copies, which most developers can only dream about. The popularity has led to spin-off titles like Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Earth for mobile platforms. It also goes without saying that the series enjoys a loyal and active community that is always creating new mods to try out and worlds to explore.

Microsoft recognized the game’s huge potential and made headlines in 2014 when it purchased the franchise for $2.5 billion. Mojang Studios has continued to support the game since then with regular updates and enhancements as technology has improved.

Just recently, the PC version of Minecraft received support for Nvidia’s RTX, which brought the game’s lighting and reflections to gorgeous new levels of detail.

Microsoft and Mojang likely have big next-generation plans for the iconic block builder, but we still have to wait another month until the Xbox showcase. Minecraft is available for PC on the Microsoft Store and supports cross-play with consoles.
