Modern Warfare 3 sells 6.5m on day one, makes $400m

Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 6.5 million copies on day one throughout the US and UK. That equates to over $400 million in sales revenue. Not bad for 24 hours work…
To put the sales figure into perspective, the previous record holder for day one sales (COD: Black Ops) moved 5.6 million in 24 hours and challenger to the FPS crown Battlefield 3 sold ‘only’ 5.5 million copies in its first week.
The day one figure of $400 million makes it the third straight year that Call of Duty has set “day one launch records across all forms of entertainment,”. In 2009 Modern Warfare 2 set the record with $310 million and 4.7 million sales, Black Ops then bettered that in 2010 with $360 million and 5.6 million sales.
According to the Activision press release, no other entertainment franchise has set such a record three years in a row and earnings from the Call of Duty franchise now exceed box office takings for the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings movie franchises.
Acti Publishing Eric Hirshberg added: “Call of Duty is more than a game. It’s become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium. It is the most intense, adrenaline pumping entertainment experience anywhere.
“I would like to thank our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games for making a brilliant game. But most of all, I would like to thank our millions of passionate fans worldwide. We made this game for you.”
But is it actually any good? Find out in our Modern Warfare 3 review.
