Monster Hunter Stories 2

Monster Hunter Stories 2 trailer lands at Summer Game Fest

The turn-based spin-off returns.

Since a live and in-person E3 was once again not held this year due to the pandemic, everything has gone all digital. The main E3 show starts this weekend, but the week was kicked off by Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest today. Just like last year, the host of The Game Awards had plenty of world premiere (just imagine that being said in a deep, trailer-guy narrator voice) trailers for everyone to get excited about. One of such was a new trailer for Monster Hunter Stories 2, a spin-off in the Monster Hunter series.

The game, subtitled Wings of Ruin, is a 2D RPG side story within Capcom’s massively successful franchise. The first game in the series released way back in 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS and mobile. The Stories games are more traditional 2D JRPG games, with a much greater focus on narrative. In this trailer, we see two of the series’ biggest monsters, Rathalos and Nergigante, duke it out over a massive volcano.

There is lots of over-the-top anime melodrama going on in the new Monster Hunter Stories 2 trailer. It appears the heroes of the story are trying to stop something calamitous from happening. Rathalos also appears to be possessed by some malevolent force, which may or may not have something to do with whatever creature is being born that is referenced at the end of the trailer. A special Deluxe Edition for the game was also announced, which includes the base game, a new costume for the character Ena, and two pairs of Razewing armor sets.

Rise to your next story

You also get sticker sets, a new hairstyle for the player character, and two new costumes for your Palico. If you pre-order the game you will also receive a Kamura Maiden outfit for Ena from Monster Hunter Rise. Speaking of, if you transfer your save data from Rise over to Monster Hunter Stories 2, your player character will get the armor from Rise. The game will release very soon on July 9, and you can find more information for it on Steam.
