When Blizzard launched Diablo 3 there was an influx of WoW players thanks to the special World of Warcraft Annual Pass.
The Annual Pass was a way to encourage WoW players to subscribe for a year and as an incentive they were offered a free copy of Diablo 3.
Many WoW players jumped at the chance of a free full game but most played through the game once and then returned to the MMO. This helped boost player numbers for Diablo 3 at launch and set the game off to a great start, but numbers soon dropped off and then levelled out quite quickly.
World of Warcraft game director Tom Chilton said at BlizzCon today that there are no plans for another WoW Annual Pass at this time.
“We don’t currently plan to do another annual pass. It’s something that made sense at the time when we had a really compelling offer like the free Diablo 3.”
“Some players have suggested that maybe we do it with the Diablo 3 expansion. We don’t think that’s compelling as the original shipping game was because no matter who you were, even if you hadn’t played the previous Diablos, Diablo 3 was still relevant to you. Whereas eight now with an expansion that feels less so. No plans to do that right now.”
Diablo 3 players will probably rejoice at this news, they were not exactly pleased when free copies were dished out to WoW subscribers when Diablo 3 launched.
With a new WoW expansion announced, there’s less of an incentive to keep WoW players locked in, they’re now eagerly awaiting the Warlords of Draenor.
