Obsidian Entertainment Working On Mystery Project Led By Josh Sawyer (2)

Obsidian Entertainment is certainly a very busy studio at this moment. Aside from working on both the recently launched Grounded, the still work-in-progress Avowed, as well as DLC for The Outer Worlds, the now Xbox-owned studio is just not taking a break. We now know that Obsidian Entertainment is working on a brand new game led by design director Josh Sawyer.

This news comes via Sawyer’s Tumblr post. The Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity stalwart shared an explanation of how his role in the studio functions. Aside from meetings with other design directors, playing builds, giving feedback, he was also managing the teams as a whole. What was missing was definitely the working on games part. However, as a fan expressed the disappointment at seeing Sawyer was not working on something, the industry veteran clarified that he actually was (h/t Resetera), and it is not Avowed.

Plot thickens

Cue the speculation. Considering his background in helping make Pillars of Eternity a force to be reckoned with, Sawyer would have been a shoo-in to direct Avowed. After all, it is a first-person role-playing game set in the same universe. Everyone would love a return to the Fallout: New Vegas style of games, Avowed would have benefited from such a seasoned hand guiding it. Alas, it is not to be. Sawyer’s next project with Obsidian Entertainment remains a mystery. Another RPG would be expected, but we have been surprised before.

This reveal means that Obsidian is working on at least three games concurrently now. In addition to DLC, fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming months and years. You can get your survival fix with Grounded, enjoy the isometric RPGs with Pillars while you wait for Avowed, and go crazy with hype at Sawyer’s next project. The future is bright indeed.
