News about a Metal Gear Solid movie stretches all the way back to 2012, when the project was officially announced. In 2014, the project picked up director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who has since directed Kong: Skull Island. Now, the mysterious film seems to have landed an actor for the lead role. Oscar Isaac, who played Poe Dameron in recent Star Wars films, will play Solid Snake in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie.
Originally reported by Deadline, the inclusion of Isaac doesn’t mean that the Metal Gear Solid movie is any closer. The actor has a hectic schedule, and “a production start date is still unknown, but his involvement makes this property a high priority for the studio going forward.” Naturally, Hollywood is also reeling from the Covid-19 pandemic, which has already shut down or at least stunted the production of multiple major films. To that end, there is no release date in sight for the Metal Gear Solid movie.
He’s Snake, but when?
The Metal Gear Solid timeline is fairly straightforward. What’s confusing is its characters. Luckily, we already know that Oscar Isaac will portray Solid Snake, a product of the Les Enfants Terribles project. Solid Snake is a clone of the Snake known as Big Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. That being said, Solid Snake still appears in a number of Metal Gear Solid titles, so the question regarding this film is which adventure it will depict.
Sony’s Metal Gear Solid movie will likely surround the story of Solid Snake’s mission on Shadow Moses Island. In the game, this event takes place in 2005 and sees Solid Snake come out of retirement for one last mission. The island has been taken over by FOXHOUND under the command of Liquid Snake, or Ocelot as he was previously known. Liquid Snake threatens to use an advanced weapons platform named Metal Gear REX to fire nukes across the planet unless the U.S. gives him the body of Big Boss. Solid Snake is sent on a covert mission to retake the island, disable the Metal Gear, and eliminate Liquid Snake.
