The teasing is over, Grinding Gear Games has revealed their next major content update and details of the new features.

The next update is called Path of Exile: Forsaken Masters and this time there’s no new class but there’s a stack of new features that will really enhance the adventures in Wraeclast.

Added to this expansion are seven Masters which are characters that will offer special missions to players with their own unique style of quest.

As you roam the wilderness of Wraeclast, you will sometimes cross paths with the Forsaken Masters. All seven of them have their own unique missions that they either need your help with, or want to train you to handle. Haku asks you to cleanse an ancestral area and recover a lost Karui spirit. Vorici will train you in the art of assassination.

Completing missions for the Masters will increase your reputation with them. As you progress through the eight levels of reputation with each Master, you gain access to more of what they can offer you.

The seven Masters each have their own style of mission and each of these missions has many variations. As you explore deeper into Wraeclast, the pool of available variations increases to challenge you in new ways.

The Master Assassin, Vorici, may task you with aiding him in an assassination against one of a number of well-guarded targets, leaving no survivors. The guards may have powerful mods, or be protected by traps or Rogue Exiles. Or he may want to simply send a message by grievously harming his mark, or incapacitating and robbing him, or leaving a witness to the bloodshed. Perhaps you’ll have to free and rescue a helpless hostage.

All of the Missions and their variations can occur anywhere in the game, including within end-game Maps.

That’s not all though, players are going to be getting their own “Hideouts”. Think of these like player housing in an MMO, it’s you or your guild’s own special area that can be customised to create a “personalised town”. Masters will also reside in the hideout offering players daily Missions and help players train in the art of advanced crafting.

Appease the Masters and they will train players in “various specialisations” at the hideout’s crafting bench. This will enable players to manipulate weapons “in new ways” by modifying sockets and special crafting mods.

It goes without saying that there will be new items and mods added to the game. Mods created on the new crafting benches will show up on tooltips in a new brighter blue colour. Once levelled up with the Masters there will also be ” Magic items with a specific, new, build-defining mod” available for purchase from the Masters. There’s also 16 new unique items.

Old content has been revamped in this update with improved boss fights and new lore. That’s not all though; the extensive passives trees has been given a makeover with changes to the Witch, Shadow and outer Ranger areas. Balance changes have also been made so players will be granted one passive tree reset when it launches.

There’s a new hardcore Challenge League called Beyond (details on 15 August) and also the new Rampage League (details on 8 August).

Keep an eye out for more on the official site in the coming days and prior to the expansion’s launch on 20 August. Exciting stuff!
