Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, like the many entries in the franchise that came before them, feature a variety of monsters to capture and train. Some of those creatures are familiar. Some of them are not. One returning favorite is Shelgon, a powerful Dragon-type Pokémon that becomes more powerful still if you make the right moves. Here is our guide explaining how to evolve Shelgon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet so it gains access to its most powerful stats and abilities.

How to evolve Shelgon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Shelgon evolves into the Salamence, a powerful dragon with access to lethal abilities such Ember, Dragon Breath, Zen Headbutt, and more by the time it reaches level 50. Such abilities make the blue dragon a useful counter to numerous adversaries. It also possesses strong Attack, Defense, and HP ratings typical of the breed.

To evolve Shelgon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, level it up until it reaches level 50. The fastest way to pump up its levels is to feed it candy. That candy is commonly earned as a reward for completing raids. If you have any precious Rare Candy to devote to the effort, save it until you are working toward the more time-consuming higher levels. You can put Shelgon in a party with stronger Pokémon to quickly progress to level 40 or so by roaming late-game regions such as North Province (Area Two).

In order to acquire Shelgon in the first place, trainers must first capture Bagon. Unfortunately, Bagon is exclusive to Pokémon Violet. Players with access to only Pokémon Scarlet will need to trade with a helpful friend. Trainers exploring in Pokémon Violet can search for Bagon in various caves scattered around Paldea, where it appears most commonly. The cave just outside the western town of Alfornada is especially large, making it an ideal location. If none of the desired creatures appear on a given trip through the cave, trainers should host a picnic to cause new enemies to spawn, then wander through the environment again.

Once a Bagon reaches level 30, it automatically evolves into Shelgon. Then there are only 20 more levels to go. You’ll add a powerful Salamence to your crew almost before you know it.
