Roper On Brevik’s Marvel Universe

Speaking to IncGamers, Champions Online’s Bill Roper has expressed his feelings about former Blizzard colleague, David Brevik, heading up a competing superhero MMO, Marvel Universe.

Roper and Brevik developed the massively popular Diablo game while at Blizzard Entertainment, then left the company to form Flagship Studios along with Max and Erich Schaefer. Sadly, Flagship’s maiden voyage ended prematurely, as the studio’s Hellgate: London sunk not long after launch, and the company dissolved in August 2008. Roper was taken on by Cryptic Studios three months later to lead the team working on the upcoming Champions Online.

Earlier this week, Gazillion Entertainment announced that Brevik had been taken on as the studio director of Gargantuan, the team developing Marvel Universe, another MMO where players create ‘superhero’ characters and fight crime.

When speaking to IncGamers, Roper confirmed that he knew of Brevik’s plans to take on Marvel Universe long before Tuesday’s announcement, and that their 12 year friendship is still strong.

“I’m really glad that he is back in the driver’s seat on a game since it’s really where he does his best work and is also the happiest.” Roper added. On the topic of competition between the two games, Roper is certain that the lengthy period between release dates will prevent direct rivalry.

“David is at the very beginning of his project and we’re launching on 1 September, so I think that things will be fairly well established one way or another by the time we’re in the market together.”

But is there room for two such similar games in the MMO market? Roper believes there is.

“[T]he hope for all of us in game development is that the number of players just keeps growing worldwide and that we can all make games that are enjoyed by tons of fans.”
