Long-time readers will know that I’ve got some serious love for Derek Yu’s Spelunky because its side-on, randomly-generated, permadeath, Roguelike platforming is both really well designed, and a superb example of just-one-more-go gaming.
Happily, the official Spelunky Tumblr has posted up a PC release date for the revamped version of the game which hit Xbox LIVE Arcade a year ago. That date is 8 August. Mark your calendars.
The revamped version contains completely redone graphics, multiplayer modes, and a whole host of new areas, enemies, secrets, items, and features. In short, if you really liked the free version, you will want to play this. If you didn’t play the free version, you can download it here and then join the rest of humanity in really liking it and wanting to play the revamped version. If you did play the free version and didn’t really like it, you’re probably broken in some way.
It’ll be hitting both Steam and GOG and, if previous reports are to be believed, the Humble Store.
Unfortunately, this version makes the giant spiders even goddamn creepier. I’m so glad they’re only in the first area.
