Square Enix couldn’t understand why Activision scrapped True Crime:…

The game formerly known as True Crime: Hong Kong has gone through quite a journey. Developed by United Front Games, it started life as Black Lotus, was then rebranded by publisher Activision to True Crime: Hong Kong and was then dropped altogether.
It has since been picked up by Square Enix and had its name changed to Sleeping Dogs.
IncGamers recently spoke to Square Enix London’s Alastair Cornish, who expressed his confusion as to why the game was dropped in the first place.
“…when we first saw the title we were scratching our heads trying to figure out what Activision were playing at because we thought it was in great shape,” said Cornish.
But what has Square Enix added?
“I think the principal thing we gave the developers (United Front Games) was more time, as well as help them identify the areas that were looking great – the crown jewels of the game, if you will. Sometimes when you’re too close to title internally you can’t see the wood for the trees and you don’t really recognise some of the core strengths.
“Then, having just come off of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Just Cause 2, we brought some experience with open world games and how the world works. Really, though, they already had a great handle on that and it was just a case of little bits of advice here and there to fine tune it.”
Our hands-on write up of Sleeping Dogs is coming soon, as is our interview with Alastair Cornish in full.
In the meantime, here’s a trailer:
