Symbiogenesis Nft Project Square Enix

Square Enix’s ‘Symbiogenesis’ is not actually a new Parasite Eve, but an NFT Project

Not the surprise we were hoping for.

When a new trademark for the name Symbiogenesis was spotted last month, Parasite Eve fans started getting excited. After all, it’s been years since The Third Birthday and the series has stayed quiet since. Unfortunately, the trademark for Symbiogenesis has turned out to be the name for an NFT project by Square Enix. And this is not very good news.

Earlier today, Square Enix tweeted out a short teaser for the event. The trailer itself is rather simple. And alongside it is the tagline “Untangle the Story,” which is also very vague. The collection is planned to release in spring 2023. But since this Symbiogenesis project is simply an NFT collection, there’s not much point in getting excited. Really though, beyond knowing that there’ll be NFTs, there’s no telling what this project actually will be.

Symbiogenesis is another NFT project from Square Enix

It’s easy to have forgotten all about NFTs after their surge in infamy earlier this year. In fact, several companies that were in favor of them have since backpedaled. For example, Ubisoft introduced NFTs to Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, before taking them out in September. On the other hand, Square Enix hasn’t changed their stance on the blockchain. Yosuke Matsuda, president of Square Enix, is well known for his support of NFTs. And the first proper implementation of them came through Final Fantasy VII merchandise. Symbiogenesis looks to just be one step further for the company’s NFT plans.

In all honesty, if there was ever a time for Parasite Eve to make a comeback, it was now. Survival horror titles are getting a second wave of popularity thanks to the latest Resident Evil games. Even Silent Hill is making an unexpected comeback. So it seems strange for Square Enix to not capitalize on this in some way. Of course, the Symbiogenesis NFT project doesn’t necessarily mean Parasite Eve isn’t coming back. But even if it did, its association with an NFT project will undoubtedly have a negative impact. We’ll see the true scope of Symbiogenesis next year, and hopefully, Square Enix changes its mind about NFTs in the process.
