Oninaki Demo

[UPDATE] Square Enix’s Oninaki demo is now available, locked at 30 FPS

Update: Our initial reports stemming from the press release provided by Square Enix/Tokyo RPG Factory and system requirements on Steam were inaccurate. Although the required and recommended hardware specifications indicate the display being 720P 30FPS/1080P 30FPS, these can be changed within the demo to 60FPS. However, there have been reports that this can only be changed with a controller (including our own testing with two different users), with some of the menu navigation being the same. The loading/save text within the demo also uses the word “console” when discussing not powering off your system while the autosave feature is enacted. However, this may be changed upon the game’s full release.

Oninaki is an upcoming game published by Square Enix. Although that might seem a little vague, the team behind the game is no stranger to the scene. Tokyo RPG Factory (I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear) has now set its action-RPG sights on multiple platforms for release. And with that, the team has announced a playable demo coming today to PC and other platforms.

New demo, new trailer

To add a little more sustenance to this sparse announcement, Square Enix has also offered a bit more to sink your teeth into. The demo was news enough, sure, but a new Oninaki demo trailer has also become available to showcase what you can expect within that sliver of gameplay coming to Steam.

System check

If you head over to the Steam page for Oninaki, you can check out the images and videos available along with learning a few tidbits about the game. The other thing you might take note of are the system specs necessary to run the title.

Although it does list out both the recommended and required hardware specifications, both tabs indicate a 30 FPS display. This doesn’t indicate that the final product will be capped and/or locked at these settings. However, if you were looking to get the best visuals out of the demo, you might have to settle for what the game has to offer in its current state (see below). This might also be in response to the demo launching on both the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 consoles. However, it is unclear at this point if those have played a part in the decision or if they will change come launch.

Oninaki will release on August 22. The game will make its way to PC via Steam, while also finding a home on the Switch and PS4. If you’re curious enough or are sold by the demo, you can pre-order the game now through its Steam page.
