Square launches ad-supported cloud gaming portal

At long last, it’s possible to play Hitman: Blood Money in a java-powered plug-in and be interrupted by adverts every ten or twenty minutes to ‘earn’ yourself more ‘free’ playtime. Truly, this is the future. Yes, this is Square Enix’s newly-launched ‘CoreOnline’ portal, which allows you to stream games (just the two of ’em for now) for free, in return for watching some thrilling advertisements.

Alongside Hitman: Blood Money is Mini Ninjas, although at present that simply redirects you (after a clunky back-and-forth transition) to Google’s Chrome Web Store, where the game has been streaming for some time already.

Tomb Raider: Underworld and Gyromancer are touted as games that are coming soon to the service, and Lara Croft: Guardian of Light should be there in October.

Longer adverts will ‘earn’ you more free in-game time (an advert of, say, around 1.30 will get you about 25 minutes), and it’s also going to be possible to buy individual levels or the full game as an ad-free version too.

Or, you know, you could get Blood Money from a digital download service for about $5-8 USD. Whichever you prefer.
