Cloud Imperium will be pleased as punch today as they surpass the $20 million mark in crowd funding.

The new goal means that the development team will now be adding first person combat on “select lawless” planets which will really open the game up with a whole new experience for players.

“It was not quite a year ago when we began our voyage with this incredible community,” said Roberts, Cloud Imperium CEO. “Honestly, we never dreamed we’d reach this point so quickly. It’s a testament to the passion that our backers have for space sims and PC gaming. We have the best community in all of gaming and they are literally taking part in helping us develop Star Citizen.

We are breaking new ground in community interaction,” said Roberts. “The fans are involved through feedback forums, polls and direct contact with our dev team, and all the while they are continuing to back our project even more and helping us put out the word about Star Citizen. Our backers are our sales force. It’s really quite liberating for us and for our fans who are helping us create the dream of a true AAA PC game without the restrictions of a publisher.”

At $21 million the Salvage Mechanic career will be added with its own story tie-ins and players will also be able to discover the secrets of the ancient Hadesians, locate valuable components and cargo, and even make first contact with a new race.

Following yesterday’s show stopping video at the AMD reveal, the game looks to be coming along very nicely. I think of all the games to come out in 2014, Star Citizen is going to be one of the most talked about.
