Star Wars Rogue Squadron movie Will Only Take Influences From Games (1)

The past week has been full of excitement and surprises when it comes to the world of entertainment. The world of games got plenty to get hyped about from The Game Awards 2020. Meanwhile, Disney rolled out its massive plans for both its TV and film offerings. One of those just so happens to be straddling the divide. The announcement of a Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie directed by Patty Jenkins will surely stoke the flames of nostalgia.

For fans of a certain vintage, the 1998 game of the same name is among the best video game adaptations ever. However, do not expect the same for the movie.

In an interview with IGN, Jenkins emphasized that the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie will be an original piece of work. While it will be greatly influenced by both the games and the books, the story will remain an original creation.

Memories relived

Back in 1998, it was a definite thrill to step into the shoes of Luke Skywalker. With the array of wonderfully detailed ships from the movies at your disposal, it was surreal to see it all come alive via the PC. There were bonus levels to enjoy, and you could even relive the Death Star trench run. Better yet, you could jump into the Battle of Hoth. It was, and still is, one of the greatest Star Wars games.

How that will influence the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie remains to be seen. With Luke Skywalker a memory now, we could be looking at a prequel or sorts, or a venture into the future. The possibilities are quite endless in a galaxy as vast as Star Wars.

The Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie was just one of the many Star Wars announcements to come out of Disney’s Investor Day 2020 conference. Jenkins, who also directed Monster and Wonder Woman, has targeted a Christmas 2023 release.
