Subnautica Below Zero Expansion

Subnautica devs announce standalone expansion called “Below Zero”

For many of us on PC, Subnautica is one of those indie gems that became quite an experience to behold. That’s probably why many of you will be excited to know that developer Unknown Worlds have announced a standalone expansion — Below Zero.

Subnautica: Below Zero

We don’t know too many details as of yet except that Unknown Worlds are hard at work in this new venture. The company has mentioned the following:

Unknown Worlds is building a stand-alone expansion to Subnautica, called Subnautica Below Zero. Set in an ice-bound region of planet 4546B, after the events of the original game, Below Zero will offer a new chapter in the Subnautica universe. We would like to show you some of Below Zero’s concepts, and share our plans for release.

In the coming months, we will release an unfinished, early version of Below Zero in Early Access. We will then begin releasing consistent content updates, carefully crafting the game based on your feedback – Just like the original Subnautica.

Since it will be a standalone expansion, it will also be on Steam Early Access. Now, we do know how certain games have taken a lot of flak because of this practice. However, the main game is one of those exceptions to the rule. After spending five years in development, it was released earlier this year to critical acclaim.

Still, five years is indeed a long time. We’re hoping that Unknown Worlds doesn’t keep us waiting that long for Below Zero.

Are fans excited about this new development? Will you be gearing up to dive deep into the frozen depths? Let us know.
