Summer Games Done Quick 2020 moves online for August event

Still the same, but online.

With all the important events going on in the US and around the world, you could almost be forgiven if you nearly forgot about COVID-19. The virus is still an ongoing issue, and has affected many events through delays or cancellations. I’ve been wondering about the state of Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) 2020, the speedrunning charity planned for this August. Today, Games Done Quick announced that the event will still continue as scheduled, however it’s moving online.

The good news is that SGDQ 2020 will remain the same, mostly. Beginning August 16, the event will gather speedrunners from around the world to play games real fast. Like previous SGDQs, it will collect donations to benefit Doctors Without Borders. It will still run 24 hours a day for an entire week, ending on August 23.

But there is that obvious difference — it will be completely online this time. That means no large crowds of people shouting “OOORB,” nor will there be a couch of people awkwardly firing off puns. It won’t be completely the same, but it’s still set to provide a good service for a great cause.

Donations for charity, for great justice

Back in April, GDQ ran a speedrunning event in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Corona Relief Done Quick earned more than $400,000 USD for Direct Relief, a worldwide humanitarian aid organization dedicated to providing PPE to medical professionals in need. It was the most successful impromptu event the organization had.

I’m sure SGDQ 2020 will also be met with similar success, and much, much more. AGDQ 2020, which ran in January, broke the company’s record with more than $3.16 million raised. Last year’s SGDQ also earned more than $3 million.

Games Done Quick has updated its submission requirements for SGDQ 2020. The company listed the updated instructions on its official page. For viewers, however, be sure to catch the event live on its Twitch page.
