thatgamecompany, developers of Journey, flOW and Flower, is now free and able to bring titles to platforms outside of the PlayStation 3, according to a news update made on the company’s official site. Co-founder Jenova Chen writes that the developer has “raised funding to develop and release our games independently” which means that the team’s games can potentially come to “more platforms”.

The release of Journey marked the end of a three-game exclusivity deal with Sony, which meant that prior games by thatgamecompany only appeared on the PS3. Chen notes that the developer is “extremely grateful to Sony” and cites the success of Journey becoming the fastest selling PlayStation Network title in history as evidence of a mutually beneficial relationship.

Funding for thatgamecompany’s next project is coming from Benchmark Capital. Chen says to “stay tuned” for more details of that forthcoming game. No information about proposed platforms have been released as yet.
