The Mafia: Trilogy trailer teases a possible remaster from 2K

Watch out for oranges.

2K released a very brief teaser trailer for Mafia: Trilogy today with footage from the Mafia series of games. There are two voiceovers in it. One seems to stem from Mafia II‘s protagonist, Vito Scaletta, and the second comes from Mafia III‘s hero, Lincoln Clay. Check out the teaser below.

A possible remake

It’s unsure if Mafia: Trilogy is a remaster or a remake, but 2K promises an announcement on May 19 with more details. If any of the Mafia games were to get the remake treatment, the original Mafia would make the most sense. After all, it originally released in 2002. The game was smaller in scope than its sequels, so it would be an easier task to remake it. On the other hand, Mafia II released in 2010. It’s likely that a remaster would suit it just fine. Mafia III, released in late 2016, is modern enough that a simple enhanced edition would probably suffice.

If you’ve never played the Mafia series, imagine Grand Theft Auto but set in the past. You run, drive, and fight in third-person, explore fictional cities that represent real locations, and play through a story involving crime, betrayal, and murder. In addition, each game explored different eras of criminal activity. Mafia was set in the 1930s, Mafia II took place in the 1940s and 1950s, and Mafia III starts in 1968. The setting and old school aesthetics are part of the appeal of the Mafia games. You’ll also probably enjoy them if you like classic gangster films.

Development

Hangar 13, lead developer of Mafia III, appears to be heading Mafia: Trilogy. Curiously, each Mafia game so far has been developed by a different studio. Mafia was developed by Illusion Softworks, before it was acquired by 2K and became 2K Czech, who developed Mafia II. That pattern would repeat itself when 2K Czech merged with Hangar 13 after the development of the third game.

Be sure to check back on May 19 for more information.
