The War Z throws hat into the zombie survival MMO ring

With the run-away success of Arma 2 mod DayZ, it was inevitable that others would try to get a sweet slice of the zombie survival (and human survival) MMO pie. The War Z, newly announced by the California-based Hammerpoint Games, looks like it’ll be doing exactly that; though to give the game its due, it appears to have been in development prior to the DayZ craze.

It’s the usual zombie set up. A nasty virus has ravaged the land and now only a few human survivors … well you know the drill here. It’s five years after the outbreak and cities are infested with rotting undead meanies. As a player on one of the game’s servers, you’ll have to use skill, cunning and an RPG-like experience point system to find food, locate yourself a few weapons, and survive in the face of threats from zombies and fellow humans.

Maps of 200-400 square kilometers are promised, as are both ‘permadeath’ servers and easier going ones where you can respawn.

The War Z will only require you to make a one-off payment for the game itself. There will be no subscription charges, and while the press release leaves the door open for in-game transactions they are described as “not required”.

The game is due for the PC this autumn and a closed beta sign-up is available here.
