Having finally seen gameplay for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, there remain many questions for fans before heading into the 1270s. Sure, you can raid villages, hoard resources for upgrades, take part in flyting challenges, and all, but now we know we can have fun as either a male or female Eivor. However, unlike Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you can switch between those two genders at any time.
This confirmation comes via game director Eric Baptizat, who was speaking to GamesRadar. “You can decide to play male or female, [but], you are allowed to change, at any time, your skill tree or the gender of your character—you can swap at any time.”
It definitely makes more sense in terms of story. After all, in Odyssey, your choice between Alexios or Kassandra greatly changed the narrative. With Eivor being the primary protagonist, this freedom of choice is thus less troublesome to implement. However, your choice of gender will have an impact on the story, but the overarching tale in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla remains the same.
“It was important to make this option available for the player. It’s something that the player can decide for the way they want to play, because it has some impact on the narrative,” Baptizat explained. “But it’s not two different stories. It’s the same story of the character—whatever options your character decides.”
Allowing players to change Eivor on the fly will hopefully let fans experience more. That is the team’s aim for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, for fans to “experience all the possibilities of the game.”
With Assassin’s Creed Valhalla set to take a huge chunk of time to complete, it would be nice not to have to restart the game just to see things a little differently. Now you can terrorise ancient England as either a male or female Eivor, and strike fear into your enemies’ hearts.
