The Rift and Vive have now been priced and the final one of the big three is Playstation VR. We now know the price and it’s more affordable.

At GDC today Sony announced that Playstation VR will be arriving in October this year and will be released at the more consumer friendly price of $399/£349/€399. PC gamers are having to shell out considerably more for the Rift at $599 and the Vive at $799.

Playstation owners might have to spend a little more though as a PlayStation Move camera will be required and there’s also the Playstation hand tracking controllers to think about . However, anyone who has these peripherals already will be all set to go.

Does it matter to PC gamers? No in the fact that we would prefer to use a PC, but yes in the fact that this lower price set by Sony is more accessible to the whole gaming community. This is good news for PC gamers because the more Playstation owners that adopt VR quickly, thanks to the lower price, the more developers are likely to start investing in creating decent games that are more than just picking up and moving objects around.

Although the PSVR resolution (1920×1080) may not be quite up to the Rift or Vive (2160×1200), that won’t bother Playstation users who should receive a solid experience at an affordable price.

$399 was the price most PC gamers were expecting to see from Oculus and it’s a little disappointing that both the main PC VR systems have proved to be so expensive at launch. Let’s just hope Rift and Vive prices start falling at the end of the year.
