What is Project Orion and how does it relate to Cyberpunk 2077?

What on Earth does Orion mean for Cyberpunk 2077?

Cyberpunk 2077 has recently benefited from its 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty release, revolutionizing the way we play the game and adding a whole new story arc. This may be the final update for the game, but CD Projekt RED isn’t done with the franchise just yet. Around this time last year, CD Projekt RED released a Tweet that introduced Project Orion to the world, and excited fans everywhere. So, what does Orion mean for Cyberpunk’s future?

What is Project Orion?

In the tweet that introduced Project Orion, CD Projekt RED also released all other projects that the company is working on. They said that Orion is the code name for the next installment in the Cyberpunk franchise that will ‘continue harnessing the potential of this dark future universe.’ Not wanting to give away the name of their next Cyberpunk game, the company has settled for the code name ‘Orion’. We have yet to see if Orion is an arbitrary choice to not attract any guesses and predictions, or whether it does hint at something the game will bring.

In that same tweet, code names for other projects they were also working on were also revealed, including a few titles for The Witcher franchise as well as an entirely new original game. We have a lot to look forward to.

What does Orion mean?

Orion is a giant and very handsome hunter in Greek Mythology, and there is even a constellation to go with it. Considering the setting of Cyberpunk is a dystopian future, I wouldn’t wager that the Greek roots are what we’re looking for here. I believe, that if the code name Orion has anything to do with the Project it’s concealing, there will be some element of the hunt. Whether that materializes in being the hunter or the hunted, we wouldn’t be able to tell.

That is a slightly inconclusive result, however, as in Cyberpunk 2077, we were either hunting someone or were being hunted by Arasaka, so it is a very loose theory that could fit any game, but it’s all I got. If anything, it could hint that the game is going to be even heavier in that plot aspect.

It could also simply be that Orion is referenced, either symbolically, metaphorically, or through dialogue in the coming game. Perhaps the constellation or the myth will be a very relevant plot point.

Or, again, it could simply be a cool-sounding random word. Either way, we’re excited to find out more.

I hope you enjoyed my best attempt at explaining Project Orion for the Cyberpunk franchise. If you’re in the market for all things Cyberpunk, head on over to PC Invasion.
