XCOM: Enemy Unknown dev: There are lots of good console strategy games

Along with the announcement of every strategy game appearing on a console, comes the predictable cries that the genre does not work with a control pad. Speaking in regards to the upcoming XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Pete Murray of Firaxis has told us that there’s no reason such a game can’t work when played on a console.
“In principal, there’s no reason you can’t do a turn-based strategy game on console; Firaxis has done that pretty successfully with Civilisation Revolution,” said Murray.
“We took a lot of what we learnt from that process about how to present information, what kind of functions people need mapped to the controller [and applied it to XCOM].
“The individual elements of XCOM’s combat system aren’t terribly complicated, but it’s when you start to add them together that you get the cool emergent behaviours… like the combat combos you can pull off where you can pin someone in place and chuck a grenade at them. Individually those elements aren’t hard to map to a controller, and it’s when you add them all together it turns into a much cooler game.”
Murray went on to say that the genre has been successfully done before, and that even XCOM has taken the console plunge before now:
“I feel like there has been a lot of good strategy games for consoles. Halo Wars was pretty good and even the original XCOM had a PSOne port, so people were clearly playing that original PC game on console. It can be done, we have the technology.”
