Youporn’s Esports Team Gets Banned From ESL

The esports team sponsored by the adult entertainment portal YouPorn will no longer participate in the Electronic Sports League, as it’s being forced out of the league because of its ties to the well-known pornography website.

Team YP is being banned from the ESL based on a rule prohibiting sponsorships by those “widely known for pornographic … or other adult/mature themes and products.” The whole story was reported by VentureBeat, which obtained an email that was sent to Team YP by the Electronic Sports League.

The ESL confirmed the story by repeating that the rule against sponsors like YouPorn has been in existence for some time now. The ESL made its decision pretty clear, as it did not want to reconsider its early decision regarding Team YP. Team YP also offered to rebrand completely, by changing its original name, but the ESL did not accept any proposals.

The rule only affects Team YP, since there are no other ESL teams which have similar sponsorships. Team YP released the following statements on its official Twitter account during the weekend:

An ESL representative replied  with the following statemen after the whole story was made public by the media:

Advertising pornography is not legal in the markets we operate in, and the vast majority of partners we’re working with have strict “no drugs, no alcohol, no pornography” rules that we’ve contractually taken on board. These aren’t new rules, but ones that have been in our rulebooks for a long time. We spoke to the manager of Team YP earlier this year and in that conversation we explained the situation and rules in detail, and offered to look for potential alternatives in a bigger group. At the same time, we are consulting with our legal teams about this. We will inform the team and the management as soon as we have any updates.

How do you feel about the ESL’s decision on this topic? Do you agree with the rule regarding sponsorship? Or do you feel that Team YP got an unfair treatment in the following matter? Let us know in the comment section below.
