How to switch characters in Alan Wake 2

Two worlds, two storylines.

One of the coolest features of Alan Wake 2 is the ability to play chapters in whichever order you want. Apart from the introductory sections, you’ll soon need to learn how to switch characters in Alan Wake 2.

Saga and Alan both have their own separate chapters, and you’re free to complete them in any order. Here’s how to do it.

Alan Wake 2: How to change characters

After I heard about this feature, I jumped right into Alan Wake 2 thinking I could choose chapters from the get-go. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. How you can switch characters in Alan Wake 2 is by completing the chapter ‘Haunting’, which then allows you to switch realities in the Janitor’s Break Room.

The introductory chapters of Alan Wake 2 has you first playing through a couple Saga chapters, then Alan chapters. After about five to six hours of gameplay, this is when I completed ‘Haunting’, and made it to the chapter-switching section in the game.

At this point, the game tells you that you can switch characters by heading into the Janitor’s Break Room in the lodge you’re in. It’s not just this location though. Many break rooms allow you to do this. Then all you have to do is look at the Janitor’s bucket and hold ‘F’ to switch realities.

From then on, you can choose whether to progress Saga’s or Alan’s chapters first. I’d recommend going back and forth between characters for some balance, in case you’re getting tired of playing one or the other. It’s really up to you though, and the order you play in shouldn’t affect the story.

Both characters should each have a few of their own chapters until the final part of the game, which I believe you must play in a specific reality. Nevertheless, this is a really neat feature to see, as both Saga and Alan’s chapters are unique and enjoyable.
