The Fighting Game Glossary

The Fighting Game Glossary is a new and invaluable asset for players

Speak with your fists... and words.

Fighting games have a reputation for being hard to get into for newcomers. It is often seen as one of the more obtuse genres. Personally, I don’t feel it is any more or less difficult to get into than any other competitive esport (I will never understand what is happening in a match of League of Legends). Despite this, community members over the years have gone to great lengths to help newer players transition into the world of digital fisticuffs. The latest endeavor in that regard is the The Fighting Game Glossary.

If you’ve been in the fighting game community long enough, you’ve probably heard of Ricky, aka Infil. Before now, he was best known for crafting the Complete Killer Instinct Guide. It’s a comprehensive document covering the ins and outs of the 2013 reboot of the classic fighting franchise. The Fighting Game Glossary is, as Infil says in his own tweet about it, “Over 650 terms carefully explained with 200+ video examples and Japanese translations. Easily search by term or game, share links to terms with your friends, and explore related concepts without losing your place.”

If a term is covered in multiple games, it also lets you know that as well. As someone who learned the FGC lingo the hard way, I can say with confidence that this is an invaluable asset to new and old players alike. Sometimes even I forget what a fuzzy is, after all. With new games coming out all the time, and tournaments looking to start back up again in the near future, there’s no better time than now to brush up on your fighting game knowledge.

There are two big fighting games dropping this year. Guilty Gear Strive releases next month and The King of Fighters XV will arrive later this year. The former of which has its own section in the Fighting Game Glossary. Check it out here to learn more. Plus, now that EVO has been bought out by Sony, there are more eyes on the FGC than ever before. If you aren’t already in the FGC, this might be the perfect time to get started.
