Payday 3 promises to be the prime Payday console experience — but which consoles is it launching on, and what differences should you expect? In this guide, we explore Payday 3’s console lineup, discuss future platforms, and explain why console players should be excited about Payday’s transition to Unreal Engine.
What platforms is Payday 3 on?
Payday 3 is available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, with the standard edition costing $39.99. however, Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can play the game for free at the time of publishing.
While Payday 3 hasn’t been officially Steam Deck verified yet, players online have managed to get the game running in a playable state. Just don’t whip this one out while waiting in line at the bank, yeah?
Are there any differences between the console and PC versions of Payday 3?
Nope! Payday 3 is the same on console and PC, thanks to Unreal Engine. All versions of Payday 3 will receive updates and DLC simultaneously, with full crossplay support.
This will be music to the ears of console players, as Payday 2 was significantly limited compared to its PC counterpart. This was due to Payday 2 running on the Diesel Engine, which made it incredibly difficult to port PC updates to Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
Payday 3 runs in Unreal Engine 4, with plans to transition to Unreal Engine 5 in the future. This means that Starbreeze can seamlessly deliver the same content to all players — and feature far fancier graphics and physics to boot.
Is Payday 3 coming to Xbox One, PS4, or Nintendo Switch?
There are no plans to bring Payday 3 to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or Nintendo Switch. Due to the graphical and gameplay updates between Payday 2 and 3, Starbreeze would have to make substantial downgrades for the game to run on previous-generation hardware. Judging by the state of Mortal Kombat 1 on the Switch, I’d say they made a good call.
Payday 3 is available on Steam, Epic Games, Windows Store, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
