Role-playing games are some of the biggest games that come out each year, with their own spin on the genre. Nevertheless, you’re bound to become immersed in these game worlds.

10. Dragon’s Dogma 2

As a sequel to the beloved Capcom game, players cannot wait to get their hands on Dragon’s Dogma 2. This is a single-player action-adventure RPG set in an original fantasy world. You can create your own Arisen, choose a Vocation, and even customize a Pawn to accompany you.

This is as definitive of an RPG as you can get. You can fully step into the role of your Arisen, take on fantastical quests, and gather a party of Pawns to go on an adventure through various towns and dungeons. Dragon’s Dogma 2 comes out on March 22.

9. Metaphor: ReFantazio

Led by Persona series veterans, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a medieval fantasy RPG in a setting that mirrors our modern world. In the works since 2016, Atlus fans have been waiting a while for this spectacle. You and a party of unlikely friends will work together to battle for the throne.

RPGs really work when they give you a semi-silent protagonist to better fit yourself in their shoes. Any fan of the Persona or Shin Megami Tensei series should try this one out, as it releases sometime in late 2024.

8. Last Epoch

Having recently left Early Access after nearly five long years, Last Epoch is an action RPG that plays similarly to Diablo 4. Set in the world of Eterra, you become a time traveler who can jump between eras. Choose between 5 Classes and 15 Masteries to create a unique and powerful build.

In Eterra, you can raid dungeons to defeat hordes of monsters and collect legendary loot. Any action RPG enthusiast will find an interest in Last Epoch with its replayability through Cycles (seasons), and the unique mechanic of hopping between the past, present, and future.

7. Rise of the Ronin

Rise of the Ronin is an action RPG from Team Ninja that takes place in 19th-century Japan as you head on an epic journey during the Boshin War. You can create a custom character, which is a classic RPG feature.

It has an open world where you can fight alongside NPCs, explore cities from the past, and utilize a handy grappling hook to traverse. Also releasing on March 22, Rise of the Ronin is one of the most anticipated games of the year.

6. Blue Protocol

This free-to-play action RPG allows you to become a hero as you embark on an epic fantasy adventure. Blue Protocol is an online MMO with an anime art style featuring fast-paced combat and massive raid battles.

Nothing screams RPG like character customization and a plethora of quests to tackle. Choose from a variety of classes to suit your play style and fight an array of boss battles. Blue Protocol has a planned release date of sometime during 2024.

5. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

The long-awaited sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake is finally upon us, and it looks like one hell of a ride. FF7 Rebirth is an action RPG that continues the story of Cloud and friends in their fight against Sephiroth. Unlike Remake, Rebirth is open-world and will have a whole chunk of new and familiar content.

Explore a total of eight vast regions filled to the brim with side quests and enemy battles. Once you get to the cities and towns, you can play a plethora of minigames that reflect the original FF7’s minigames which were a blast to play. This releases on February 29.

4. Avowed

One of Xbox’s biggest releases of 2024 is Avowed, which is another action RPG, this time by Obsidian Entertainment. Set in the same world as Pillars of Eternity, Eora, it’s a first-person fantasy game that has you making difficult choices during your quests.

The Living Lands has intriguing environments with unique ecosystems. While exploring this world, you’ll come across enemies, allowing you to utilize your guns, spells, or swords, depending on how you like to play. Avowed plans to release sometime in 2024.

3. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

This action RPG by Paradox Interactive is the sequel to the cult classic Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. Based on the tabletop RPG and set in the World of Darkness series, you’ll be playing as an elder vampire in modern Seattle.

As a vampire in VTMB 2, you can feed on people of the night, use supernatural abilities, and join dangerous factions. Your choices will affect the plot, which is what makes any RPG stellar. This will be released sometime during 2024.

2. Black Myth: Wukong

Yes, it’s another action RPG, but it’s a special one depicting Chinese mythology. Based on Journey to the West, a classic Chinese novel, you play as the Destined One and explore mysterious lands filled with dangerous creatures.

Black Myth: Wukong is the pinnacle of action out of this list, harkening back to Dark Souls combat. Experience engaging tales, learn powerful spells, and meet a colorful cast of characters on August 19.

Now one of the greatest in the Yakuza series, Infinite Wealth is an action RPG with dynamic combat, a familiar cast of characters, and fun adventures in Hawaii. These fast-paced battles will have you sweating, while the resort management game Happy Resort Dondoko Island will keep you addicted.

Having released on January 26, Infinite Wealth brought along two playable characters and a turn-based combat system. It’s unlike any Yakuza game you’ve ever played, let alone any RPG you’ve ever played.
