Best ways to make money in Tears of the Kingdom (TotK)

Rupees make Hyrule a little more manageable. This guide tells you how to gather a whole pile of them in Tears of the Kingdom.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom presents players with a sprawling world full of people and monsters. As you make your way around it, you’ll find that resources are quite scarce. To get the best gear, you need to spend Rupees. Here is our guide to some of the best ways to make money in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Tears of the Kingdom – best ways to make money

Early in the game, you need to visit four general regions to learn more about what happened to Zelda. Hebra is one suggested location. It is a bitterly cold region where even the elements are against you. Fortunately, a Rito Village shopkeeper stocks armor that protects you from the ridiculous temperatures (it’s especially useful when you are seeking out the Hebra South Summit Cave frog location). Less fortunately, that gear costs a lot of Rupees.

This dynamic is common. Armor in Hyrule is expensive in general. Therefore, you need to get good at finding more currency. Two methods prove most reliable when you need Rupees: selling items and finding precious minerals.

When I met the shopkeeper in Rito Village, she advised me to explore nearby caves for minerals. That approach can certainly work. Whenever you enter a cave, seek out the obsidian mineral deposits that have sparkles of light dancing around them. Then blow them up with explosives or break them apart with stone tools. They often drop resources, potentially including Amber, Topaz, and more. You can then sell these precious stones for a decent supply of Rupees, if you don’t need to keep them for crafting.

Unfortunately, the large mineral deposits disappear once you break them apart. They don’t return until the next Blood Moon. You can duck into caves all over again to find more resources at that point, but you also may wear out your equipment as you break apart the large rocks.

My preferred method to build a fortune is to search the landscape for recipe ingredients. Then I cook those ingredients and double their value. Some ingredients are very common. For instance, I like to grab a bunch of Hylian Tomato fruit from the many plants growing in the woods southeast of Riverside Stable. If you cook five tomatoes at a time, you produce a Simmered Tomato dish that sells for 36 rupees. Cooking five of the Raw Prime Meat produces a Meat Skewer that goes for 135 rupees. A lot of common ingredients quickly assume exciting value in this way. They’re much easier to find than precious stones, and you don’t risk parting with loot you may not find again.

When grabbing meat and veggies gets old, you can raid monster settlements. The blue versions of enemies you find tend are tougher, but they often carry decent loot. You can sell for a tidy profit (and you may even find meat ingredients without needing to hunt deer and boars). Living off the land in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can be easy at times. It can also be quite lucrative!
