How to find and use Infernal Iron in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

Get on Karlach's good side.

Infernal Iron is a material in Baldur’s Gate 3 with a usage that’s rather mysterious. There’s no obvious hint about what it’s for in the game, and if you haven’t got a certain party member, it’s essentially useless. But we’ll tell you all there is to know about Infernal Iron in Baldur’s Gate 3. As an early warning, if you really like Karlach, start collecting the pieces.

Baldur’s Gate 3: How to find and use Infernal Iron

The good news about Infernal Iron is that you’ll likely find a decent amount of it just by playing the game. In my case, I’ve stumbled onto three pieces of this stuff without really trying to find it. So if you’re still quite early in the game, you can keep playing and know that you’ll eventually stumble across it. Of course, you wouldn’t look for a guide without the quick answer so here are a few places you can find Infernal Iron in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Infernal Iron #1 – Blighted Village

Head over to the Blighted Village for our first chunk of Infernal Iron in Baldur’s Gate 3. Look for the house with large barn doors just north of the Waypoint. Inside will be a blacksmith’s forge and some chests up on a platform above. You can use the ladder to climb up here or use a spell like Misty Step as an alternative method. The Infernal Iron will be inside this chest.

The next piece of Infernal Iron in Baldur’s Gate 3 requires a few steps. First, head up to Waukeen’s Rest. The village has just been under attack by Goblins and Drow but that’s not important for us right now. Once you get here, head to the northwest section where the barns are located. Head into the storehouse in the corner with boxes stacked in front of it. Inside there’ll be someone readying to attack you, who you can either talk down or respond in kind.

After he’s been dealt with, take a walk around to the back of the storehouse to find a hatch that leads to the basement. Once you’re down in the Zhentarim Basement, head to the wardrobe in the northwest corner. You’ll then pass through to the Zhentarim Hideout. Now, there are a few ways this area can play out. But the best way to deal with it is to convince the group that you’re no threat, that way we don’t need to fight anyone. The goal now is to head right to the back of the area where the gang has two small vaults. We want the room on the right as the chest contains one piece of Infernal Iron. You’ll likely start a fight when breaking in here, so get ready to defend yourself.

Infernal Iron #3 – Shattered Sanctum

This next piece could either be the easiest or most difficult to get. The Infernal Iron is located deep inside the Shattered Sanctum in a vault behind Dror Ragzlin. The vault is locked and while you can lockpick it, it’s hard to do that unseen due to the patrolling guards nearby. I decided to cast Invisibility on Astarion who was then able to pickpocket the key from Ragzlin himself, and we got in that way. But if that’s not an option for whatever reason, you can always attempt to break in the normal way and fight off whoever has a problem with it.

How to use Infernal Iron in Baldur’s Gate 3

Infernal Iron is used in the questline for Karlach. She has an Infernal Engine inside her and that causes all sorts of things to happen, both good and bad. She needs Infernal Iron to keep the Engine under control or else it’ll literally explode. It’s similar to Gale’s questline in a way, but at least Karlach doesn’t need to absorb priceless magical artifacts to keep going.

It goes without saying but if you managed to get Karlach killed in your Baldur’s Gate 3 playthrough, Infernal Iron doesn’t have much use. It is quite valuable though, so you can at least make some decent money from it by selling it to traders.

That about covers the basics of Infernal Iron. The locations detailed in this guide are by no means all of the locations, but they’re the easiest to reach during the early portions of the game. If you want to get on Karlach’s good side in Baldur’s Gate 3, start getting that Infernal Iron.
