How to unlock Samurai in FFXIV

The way of the blade.

In Final Fantasy XIV, Samurai is a Disciple of War – Melee DPS job that’s exactly what it sounds like: a job influenced by the traditional Japanese warrior. It deals some of the highest damage among the jobs of FFXIV with its unique combo-based mechanics. However, it is not one of the class options available to pick at the start of the game. Instead, it is one of several FFXIV jobs to unlock at a later point in the game. Here’s how to unlock Samurai in FFXIV.

Prerequisites to unlocking

To unlock Samurai, you need to meet two requirements:

  1. Your character has to reach level 50 in any Disciple of War or Magic class.
  2. Your account must have the Stormblood expansion purchased.

Once these are taken care of, you may proceed to the starting quest for Samurai.

How to unlock Samurai in FFXIV: The starting quest

First, teleport to the Ul’dah Aetheryte. The starting quest is ‘The Way of The Samurai,’ accessible just outside the aetheryte plaza. You need to speak with the quest NPC named ‘Ul’dahn Citizen’ at (9.2, 9.1). After talking to the NPC, use the plaza Aetheryte to head over to the Gladiator’s Guild. There you will find the Silver-tongued Showmaster standing nearby (9.1 11.4) — speak with him.

Next, go inside the Gladiator’s Guild and speak to the Far Eastern Elder at (9.4, 12.4). A cutscene will play.

At the end of the cutscene, you are given a samurai soul stone (Soul of the Samurai), a high-quality Mythrite Uchigatana, and a nameless armor coffer. Equip the Mythrite Uchigatana to change your job to Samurai, then right click and use the coffer from your inventory. You’ll get access to a full set of Samurai-exclusive starting gear. Congratulations, you have now unlocked Samurai!

Speak to Musosai to continue the questline, now as a fully fledged level 50 Samurai. There’s an instance ahead, so good luck.
