Betraying the Princess brings you to the witch, a tricky and scheming Princess, making it nearly impossible to get back on the right foot with her. Is it even worth the effort to do so, or should you just slay her again?

Slay the Princess The Witch full guide: Chapter one

To get the Witch route, you have to betray the Princess. Therefore, you have to start out without the knife. From there, you can get this outcome two different ways:

  • Try to free her, but attack her while she’s biting into her arm, or when the Narrator first tries to force you to attack her. Then click ‘Finish the job’ in the ensuing fight.
  • Talk to her, but then go back upstairs for the knife. Investigate the arm instead of picking either dialogue option. When she attacks you, don’t give up, fight back.

Any of these will lead to you dying and start chapter two off with the Witch.

Chapter two: The Witch walkthrough

The cabin is now made entirely of roots. For this chapter, the outcomes are as follows:

  • Slay the Princess: Requires the knife. She quite literally pulls the pocket sand move but with dirt. The two of you fight viciously, and then the cabin comes to life and crushes you both. This leads to The Wild.
  • Walk upstairs with the Witch, but go first: First question her chain, so she slips it off. Then choose to leave together. She’ll attack you on the stairs and you’ll both tumble down and break your backs. The Shifting Mound then takes her.
  • Walk upstairs with the Witch, but make her go first: She’ll lock you in the basement and refuse to let you out. Then the Shifting Mound takes her.
  • Walk upstairs with the Witch, but make her go first, then backstab her: Requires the knife. The two of you will tumble back down the stairs and break your backs, dying together. The Shifting Mound takes her.
  • Give her the knife as a sign of goodwill: Requires the knife. She’ll stab you and you’ll die, leading to The Thorn.
  • Try to leave: The cabin comes alive and crushes you both, leading to The Wild.

These are all possible chapter two outcomes. But the Slay the Princess Witch walkthrough continues on if you ended up on one of the chapter three paths.

Chapter three: The Wild

In this surreal and bizarre chapter, the Princess and you have become the path in the woods. Every dialogue option here except the single “(Explore)” option leads to a single choice.

  • Gaze at the hatred in your heart: You remember everything she did to you, and the two of you separate. You find her embedded in a tree, heart exposed. Whether you cut her free or kill her, The Shifting Mound takes her.
  • Bury it: If you remember the past, the above happens. Otherwise, turn inward to find your freedom. You’ll see a glimpse of the world beyond the Narrator’s cage, then the chapter ends with The Shifting Mound.

These are two different versions of the Princess for vessels. You’ll need to play this path on two different playthroughs to give both to The Shifting Mound.

Chapter three: The Thorn

The Explore options are there for you to simply hear dialogue between the Voices and the Narrator. Otherwise, go to the cabin. None of the dialogue options on the stairs matter, but they do starting at the bottom.

Your Explore options you pick will influence how she acts. If you’re mean to her, she’ll start using the Witch tone of voice again, and won’t let you take the blade from her. So the outcomes for The Thorn are:

  • Be harsh with the Princess: Accomplished by picking the first Explore option. She won’t give you the knife no matter what, making your only option to leave.
  • Gain her trust, then try to slay her: The thorns stop you from killing her. The two of you become trapped in thorns together, and The Shifting Mound takes her.
  • Leave: You’ll be trapped by the thorns. She’ll try to swallow the blade to keep you both permanently trapped. You can successfully stop her or watch her do it, but either way, she’ll be taken by The Shifting Mound.
  • Gain her trust: Pick the second or third Explore option. Don’t try to reach for the blade. Keep talking to her with comforting dialogue options until you run out of them, then reach for it. Your dialogue options after cutting her free will lead to the same outcome, but choosing to kiss her will be reciprocated with an infuriated Narrator and an achievement. This is the only moment in the game you can do this. Then either option works to deal with the thorns and escape before the Shifting Mound takes her.

That’s the end of the Slay the Princess: Witch walkthrough. In total, the Witch route has four different Princess vessels you can possibly give to The Shifting Mound, and one of the most emotional routes in the entire game. Definitely play it through all the way to find yourself and the Princess either closer together or as vitriolic as possible.
