We all know League of Legends is a big game but the latest numbers to come out of Riot Games are pretty impressive.
The figures which appeared on the Wall Street Journal claim that 27 million gamers are playing the MOBA every day which is more than double the number from October 2012. The game also reached a peak of 7.5 million concurrent players which is up from 5 million recorded last March.
The success can be put down the game embracing eSport with the numerous League of Legends tournaments, and of course let’s not forget the fact that it’s completely free to play.
The League of Legends 2014 season just kicked off and Riot are promising to push even harder with community features and eSports this year. We wouldn’t be surprised if we see even larger numbers in the months ahead.
MOBA games are bit of a phenomenon, once you get hooked in and become reasonably proficient you’ll want to keep playing, even if it is the same map over and over. Whether LoL continues to dominate remains to be seen but the competition has some catching up to do if they’re to topple Riot from their lofty heights.
