Apple: ‘we are in gaming now in a fairly big way’

Speaking at the D: All Things Digital conference this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook has acknowledged that Apple are a key player in the mobile gaming industry. However, he also said that the company has no plans to move into the traditional home console sector.
“I view that we are in gaming now in a fairly big way,” said Cook. “One of the reasons people buy an iPod Touch is gaming [but] I realise that is not the big screen you are talking about. Most people play on portable devices. Where we might go in the future, we’ll see. Customers love games.
“I’m not interested in being in the console business in what is thought of as traditional gaming. But Apple is a big player today, and things in the future will only make that bigger.”
Cook’s words were clearly carefully selected, refusing to completely rule out entry into the living room in some form – albeit not in the “traditional gaming” sense. That suggests that the door is open for Apple to enter the space currently dominated by Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony as some point, but perhaps not through the normal under-the-TV-box setup we’re used to.
