Brathwaite and Hall cancel ‘old school RPG’ Kickstarter

Brenda Braithwaite and Tom Hall have called a temporary halt to their project to raise money for an ‘old school RPG’ title. The pair’s original pitch for $1 million USD was ticking over at around $250,000 with a couple of weeks left to run, but over the weekend the decision was taken to cancel the Kickstarter campaign, refund all pledges and have a re-think about the game.

In an update posted on the campaign page, the team writes:

“Ultimately, our pitch just wasn’t strong enough to get the traction we felt it needed to thrive. Sure, it may have made it. We could have fought our way to a possibly successful end. In reading your feedback and talking it over internally, however, we decided that it made more sense to kill it and come back with something stronger.”

The immediate comments below the statement seem broadly supportive, with most backers hoping to see the project return in a more compelling form. Given Braithwaite and Hall’s RPG predigree (Wizardry and Anachronox respectively), the duo surely have it in them.

  • when you barely show any information about the game and don’t even know what the game design is then you can’t really expect much support, have at least a game design ready before talking about a game that “might” be made.

I’m not even a professional game designer with any kind of budget and I already have some groundbreaking, extremely detailed design documents written out that’d totally deserve Kickstarter success, if and only if I had more experience and could be certain that I could deliver on the project. These guys have the experience and could likely deliver something awesome, but how the heck do they not have a great game design concept down already? 😐
