ClayFighter revival coming in 2016

My enduring memory of ClayFighter involved Wolf from Gladiators playing it on Gamesmaster, so I went on a YouTube vision quest to see if I was right. I didn’t find Wolf, but the gripping tournament finale involved Shadow and Scorpio so, you know, close enough.

Sadly, that video is from the brief Dexter Fletcher Gamesmaster period. Not a Dominik Diamond to be seen.

Anyway, ClayFighter. Interplay say they have plans to bring back the clay-based fighter in 2016. A studio called ‘Drip Drop Games’ are said to be handling development duties, and the title itself is sounding like some kind of remake-and-remaster hybrid.

Interplay suggest that this one will have “the best of all previous ClayFighter titles,” but also feature “new mechanics … such as double jumping, air dashing, counters, and reversals.” I’m not entirely sure about all that, but it’s not as if the original ClayFighter mechanics are exactly sacrosanct.

Bad Mr. Frosty, Blue Suede Goo, Earthworm Jim, Hoppy, Boogerman, Tiny and all the rest will, of course, be present in some fashion.

They’re touting “remastered audio and high resolution visuals” too. Whether this can match the incredible sight of two Gladiators at the height of their 90s fame battling it out on a pretend oil rig, however, is open to question.
