Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain releasing later on PC

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is indeed coming out on 1 September… but not on PC.

As leaked yesterday, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be released worldwide on 1 September; today’s announcement is a confirmation of that date. The press release talks up the Mother Base system, and the Metal Gear Online multiplayer mode, and the (console-only) collector’s edition, and reiterates that the game will launch on 1 September.

Except on PC. Tucked away at the very end of the press release is the following: “The Steam version of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be released on September 15th, 2015.”

No reason has been given for the PC version coming later, but I suppose we just just be thankful that it’s only a two-week delay. It could be for final polish, or due to the meddling of stores and/or console manufacturers, or possibly an attempt to forestall piracy. Maybe a bit of all three. Either way: 15 September.

If there’s a silver lining, it’s this: while we’re not getting release date parity or the collector’s edition, we are getting some freebies. The “Day One” edition of the game, on consoles, will come with an Adam-Ska Special Handgun, a silver Personal Ballistic Shield, a Wetland Cardboard Box, a blue Urban Snake costume, and a Metal Gear Online XP boost. The Steam version will include all of these by default.

So, to reiterate: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be hitting PC on 15 September. Weep.
