Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition unveiled by Beamdog

In what hasn’t turned out to be a terribly well kept secret, Beamdog have now officially announced the Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition. A collaboration between the studio, Wizards of the Coast, and original lead designer Chris Avellone, the Enhanced Edition of Planescape: Torment adds contemporary features like adjustable font sizes, and native 4K support.

There are optional enhancements too, like character outlines, tab highlighting, and area zoom. These can be toggled on and off individually, so you can choose which parts you do or do not want. The Enhanced Edition also has three frame-rate options: the original 30fps, 40fps as the Enhanced Edition standard, and a more experimental 50fps option. Higher frame-rates cause potential problems with audio syncing, which is presumably why 60 (or unlimited) isn’t there as a choice.

Unlike prior Enhanced Edition releases, Beamdog have made no additions to the narrative, and there are no new characters. When I asked Project Lead Alex Tomovic about this, he said “As the Project Lead of the Enhanced Edition, I felt that it would have been impossible to add new content to the game without changing its unique atmosphere and tone.” You can read that full interview here.

Here’s a trailer for the game, plus some promotional images. Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition is due on PC on 11 April.
