Kojima Confirms Metal Gear Solid 5

Hideo Kojima, the father of the Metal Gear franchise, has confirmed Metal Gear Solid 5 will be built using his new engine, the Fox Engine.

In a recent interview, not only did he confirm the existence of the game, but also as one would expect from a game with the ‘Solid’ prefix attached, it may contain Solid Snake.

Although Kojima did confirm the game, there is still a lot that is unknown about the project. For instance, he didn’t state how far into development the game may be, so it could be right at the start or possibly well underway already.

However he did give us some details to go with, aside from confirming it will run on his new engine, it will be a bit of a departure from the usual Metal Gear Solid gameplay. It will remain infiltration based, however characters will now be able to interact, similar to how they do in Dues Ex: Human Revolution.

Although he did not state exactly how Solid Snake will be involved, Kojima did say that:

“We have not yet finished with Solid Snake, despite the fact that I wanted to let him die at the end of Guns of the Patriots,”

This of course wouldn’t be the first time Kojima has talked about Metal Gear Solid 5, with him stating previously that:

“Metal Gear Solid 4 wrapped up in 2008, and the dev team took post-project time off right after that,” Kojima revealed. “But, of course, we were in a situation where we had to start planning for MGS5. So I started coming up with several ideas.

“I had several ideas for a game featuring The Boss and the Cobra Unit during the invasion of Normandy. I then handed these plans over to the team so they could take over and make the game.

“I presented my ideas to the team during the summer of 2008. However, simply dropping MGS5 on the younger staff members was a bit heavy and there was resistance to doing it without my involvement.”

This of course is the first time that Kojima has spoken about Metal Gear Solid 5 with some concrete ideas and announced the title is in development, so fans of the long running franchise certainly have something to get excited about. Perhaps we may all be lucky enough to see a glimpse of the game at this years Tokyo Game Show if the title’s development state permits it.
