Free To Game Engine: Latest Versions Of Unity, Unreal, Source Going Free

Christmas came nine months early for game developers, as Unity, Unreal, and Source have announced free versions of these game engines.

Clearly, Unity’s early success in offering their engine for free has changed the market, as many smaller devs are eager to embrace the engine for their games, and this incentivizes bigger devs to use them as well. While many AAAs prefer making their own engines for specific games, the market for these engines has never been more booming.

In the most general terms, Unity 5 is free for smaller devs, Unreal Engine will be free up-front, with Epic to charge royalties later, and Valve’s is completely free.
