This year’s QuakeCon to once again be completely virtual

A Quake, a Quake, there must be some mistake.

The pandemic has understandably changed the plans of many convention-goers over the last year. As of now, there isn’t much sign of this slowing down. QuakeCon 2020 was handled entirely online last year. Called “QuakeCon at Home,” it pivoted to a multi-day showcase that could be viewed online in its entirety. Unsurprisingly, since things are much the same now, QuakeCon 2021 is following suit and will also be a virtual event. While this news will be disappointing to some, there’s simply not much of a way around it at this point. Regardless, I’m sure there will be some fun surprises in store at the show.

In a tweet, QuakeCon announced the event while also explaining the rationale for the continued virtual nature.

“We can’t wait to get back to Dallas with our QuakeCon family, but for the continued safety of our staff, the volunteers, and the community, this year’s QuakeCon will once again be a digital-only event,” the tweet read. “We’ll have all the Peace, Love, and Rockets – remotely – August 19-21.”

In a reply to that tweet, it went on to add: “We’ll share additional details on the streaming lineup, charity opportunities, giveaways, and more later in June, so stay tuned for more updates!

QuakeCon is online again

QuakeCon, if you’re not aware, has its origins in an IRC channel. Members wished to game together in the flesh, so they set up an event at a hotel and the rest is history. Nowadays, the convention is run by ZeniMax for the purposes of showcasing games by id Software, as well as other holdings. Of course, the reason for its inception and one of its main features is a huge LAN event, where participants bring their computers and frag each other for hours on end. Just like the ’90s. We’ll have more on QuakeCon as information comes out. I mostly just want a Quake 5, though.
