Bethesda’s latest sci-fi RPG allows you to create and roleplay your own character based in the Starfield universe. Throughout your time in this game, you’ll probably learn about some of the popular religions. In character customization, you can even pick from Traits that aligns your character with one of three religions. Since this is an entirely new franchise and world, not many players understand what all the religions do just yet. Starfield: All religions and which to choose, explained
Perhaps you’d rather create an atheist character who doesn’t align with any of the religions. Or maybe you’d like to follow one of the three popular religions in the Settled Systems. We’ve explained all the religions you can choose to follow in Starfield, and which one is the best to choose from. That way, you can make a well-guided decision on how devout your character is towards a religion in this sci-fi universe.

Enlightened
Interestingly, this religion is actually an atheist group. They don’t believe in any higher power, but instead believe in humans taking care of each other. They value community and humanitarian work by managing programs dedicated to this throughout the Settled Systems. If your character doesn’t believe in a higher power, the ‘Raised Enlightened’ Trait isn’t required, but become an Enlightened if you want to spread the gospel of humans helping other humans.
If you decide to choose this Trait, you’ll get a special chest of items in the House of Enlightened in New Atlantis. Of course, this locks you out of any benefits coming from joining other religions, but that’s to be expected.
Sanctum Universum
Considered ‘Universals’, they believe that God exists somewhere throughout the universe, and that someday humanity will meet Him. This is a fairly new religion in the Starfield timeline, mainly due to the ability to jump instantaneously across star systems. According to Universals, the invention of the Grav Drive was evidence that God wants humans to find Him.
If you choose the ‘Raised Universal’ Trait, you gain access to a special chest of items in the Sanctum Universum in New Atlantis. Just like with the Enlightened, you can only access your specific religion’s special items.
House Va’ruun
This is a fairly unique religion in Starfield, as it’s based off of worshiping a Great Serpent. House Va’ruun is a theocratic faction who worships this deity after making several grav jumps and witnessing a colonist who claimed to have communed with the Great Serpent. Apparently, the Serpent told them to worship them, or they’ll devour them when they encircle the universe. Sounds lovely!
You can decide on the ‘Serpent’s Embrace’ Trait, which won’t grant you a special chest like the other religions. Instead, whenever you grav jump, you gain a temporary boost to your oxygen and health. Unfortunately, your oxygen and health will deteriorate a bit if you don’t continue to grav jump regularly.

Starfield: Which religion is the best?
Honestly, you should choose your religion based on your roleplay style, but if you’re only here for the benefits, choose House Va’ruun. Sure, getting some unique chests of items from the Enlightened and Sanctum Universum religions is interesting. But since you’ll grav jump often (it’s basically fast traveling), you’ll also gain that health and oxygen boost frequently. It’s a little bit cultish, but who really cares when you get such a useful buff?
