Ashes Of Oahu

Ashes of Oahu lets you shape-shift into deities from Hawaiian mythology

I’ll be the first to admit my unfamiliarity with the state of Hawaii. Although Kaui was my first experience on the chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean, it did expose me to many of the local customs I knew nothing about. To bring more of that content to light, Ashes of Oahu from Wyrmbyte aims to bring traditional Hawaiian mythology into modern times when it launches on Aug 29.

A little bit of modern and mythos

The first thing you’ll notice about the game is its third-person style of combat. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the Ashes of Oahu Steam page does indicate it isn’t just about the action, having a mix of role-playing mechanics tied in. This is also pointed out in the trailer, as it hits to the fact that you can upgrade your abilities. In fact, there are promises of more than 50 skill upgrades, including having weaponry infused with magic. This reflects the game’s background, as it looks to tell stories from Hawaiian mythology in a modern setting.

Small team, big dreams

Game developers in this day and age come in all shapes and sizes. Wyrmbyte, for example, is a five-person studio based out of Colorado. However, it does look like the team has put in a lot of effort to correctly translate tales from Hawaiian mythos. I don’t want to guess at the who’s who in the trailer given my ignorance on the subject. However, Ashes of Oahu seems like a very ambitious attempt at telling those stories. I’m hopeful that this is further expanded within the game, as various deities are showcased throughout the launch trailer.

Ashes of Oahu launches on Aug 29 for $39.99 USD. If you plan to pre-order, this will grant you access three days prior to launch. The game is currently listed on the Steam store and still bears the “Spring 2019” release date despite it receiving an official launch at the end of this month. If you’re wanting more information, you can head to the game’s official website or jump over to its Discord.
